Olympic Peninsula |
The Olympic Peninsula is a piece of heaven on earth, and because of this beautiful area we only us drift boats, the rivers of this system start high in the Olympic Mountains and the Olympic Rain Forest and tumble to the ocean without any dams to impede their way. These are wild rivers and are managed by the state as wild rivers. They are the Bogacheil, Hoh and Sol Duc Rivers. I usually start fishing for large Chinook Salmon fresh from the ocean in September, this run of fish will last some years, late into November. |

These fish are large, the average is 25-35 pounds with many in the 40-50 pound range and a 60 pounder is not uncommon. Some years the area has a good run of Silver Salmon, with an average of 8-10 pounds. Hatchery Steelhead start returning in early November in good fishable amounts and last into January. These fish average 8-10 pounds, we call these fish hatchery brats. I normally start fishing the large Native runs of Steelhead around the middle of January, and this run peaks in February and March with the largest fish. We have excellent fishing all the way till the end of April most years. These native wild Steelhead are the premier fish of the Olympic Peninsula Rivers, they average 10-12 pounds. with many over 15 pounds, and numerous fish in the 20-25 pound range. I ask my clients to practice catch and release on these magnificent wild fish to help keep the wild stock healthy and fishable for generations to come. If you catch a trophy fish and decide to release it, we will be happy to take a picture of the fish and measure it for you, so a reproduction mount of your trophy can be made. Reproductions cost less than a skin mount and are actually more popular and are easier to take care of than a conventional mount. As steelheading starts to slow-down we get another run of Salmon called Springers these fish return in good numbers in April and continue into the latter part of June. These fish are fresh from the ocean and average 15-25 pounds and some are as large as 40 pounds. |
